For the past 9 or 10 years some members of the Deal & District Motor Cycle Club has ventured out across the Channel on classic motorcycles to attend a marvelous long weekend in Ostend. The whole weekend is special but the highlight of the weekend is the run on Sunday where bikes from all over Europe and beyond, assemble to take part in a run through the countryside comprising about 100 miles total.
Entrants are required to enroll for the event, either at the ‘Wapenplein’ in the Centre of Ostend on the day or the night before at the Cantine Vismijn, to receive a wallet containing all information, a nice commemorative badge and tickets for lunch and refreshments during the rest stops. The run is extremely well organized with support vehicles for those that may be unfortunate enough to break down, get a puncture etc.. At major road junctions stewards are in attendance to allow the bikes to navigate safely.
The route varies from year to year to incorporate museum visits, local agricultural fairs and scenery which is really pleasant. In many of the towns and outlying villages we visit the local people line the streets to wave as we all pass by - It is some spectacle to witness in excess of 300 Vintage, Veteran and Classic motorcycles pass by on a normally quiet Sunday! Each year the entrants are welcomed by the Mayor at Oudenberg from where we set off in procession and under Police escort on the final leg to the ‘Cantine Vismijn’ back in Ostend where presentations (trophies) are awarded each year for the most outstanding bikes. There is also a tombola where your entry number may have been drawn .. Many prizes are handed out this way.
This year was a very special occasion for us as we had decided to dedicate the run to our dear friend Ian Sheldon - hence the T-Shirts. Ian always attended this event with us and really looked forward to it each year. His son Andrew and Andrew’s wife Tracey came along this year, for the first time on the Honda motorcycle that dad, Ian, would have normally ridden. It was an emotional time for us all but we all felt that our friend Ian was with us and spurring us on our journey - God Bless him.
Below is a group Photo taken at the end of the run... Note Tom is holding a huge trophy he won with his Honda 500 Four bike - Well done Tom!!
